This course develops advanced Cantonese reading and comprehension skills through the guided study of authentic Chinese texts, including the modern Chinese novel The Three‑Body Problem (《三体》). The course focuses on understanding complex vocabulary, sentence structures, narrative styles, and cultural, historical, and social references in written Cantonese. While the main focus is on reading and understanding Chinese texts, you will also take part in lots of discussion and presentation activities, using spoken Cantonese to explore ideas, share your interpretations, and express your responses to what you read.

This course is designed for highly proficient learners seeking near‑native competence in Mandarin through the focused study of Chinese‑language media. Using authentic news reports, editorials, commentary, and multimedia content, the course develops advanced comprehension of contemporary Mandarin as used in public discourse. Emphasis is placed on understanding media language, rhetoric, perspective, and cultural context, while you will also use spoken Mandarin extensively in discussion, analysis, and presentation activities to interpret issues, evaluate viewpoints, and articulate informed responses.
